Behind The Scenes At Home Care Preferred: Care Coordinator

Since 2015, Julie Philips has worked at Home Care Preferred as a Care Coordinator. Having previously worked in care as a Team Leader, she now manages new clients and a team of Support Assistants. Julie loves to spend time in her garden and hopes to travel to Cape Verde in the future. We caught up with her to hear more about her busy role and how she manages her day.

What appealed to you about working at Home Care Preferred?

JP: I had been working for another care provider and I attended an exhibition where I met some of the Home Care Preferred team. They were so friendly I decided to move jobs without hesitation.

What does your job as a Care Coordinator entail?

JP: I look after Home Care Preferred’s new clients and the care team. I allocate visits to clients, manage team members availability and match members of the care team with suitable clients.

What does a normal day look like for you?

JP: I start my day very early; I deal with various incidents; staff may be unwell, or a traffic accident could throw the day off. I re-organise the schedule and allocate clients to available members of the care team. I spend a lot of time prioritising by client needs. I tend to look at the flexibility I have within our existing clients and move the team around to accommodate. I spend a lot of my day sorting calls and enquiries.

What do you like most about working at Home Care Preferred?

JP: I love the challenge. I have to juggle several things to get everything scheduled, sometimes it can look impossible at first, but I love that. I am always able to pull it together. You need to be very committed and love the job because it’s often very busy.

What do you find most challenging about your role?

JP: I don’t like having an unhappy team. It can be very difficult for the everyone when they lose a client, especially if carers have built a rapport with them. Naturally, it causes them to feel unhappy.

How do you feel about the company as a whole?

JP: We are very much a team and we communicate far too much (if that’s possible!). We all do the best we can in any circumstance and keep everyone well informed. This is by far, the happiest I have felt in any role I’ve ever taken. Home Care Preferred has really supported me in my personal life throughout the various challenges I have had to overcome in the last year.

What’s your favourite quote that you live and work by?

JP: “The harder you work, the luckier you get.”

What advice would you give to someone starting out as a Care Coordinator?

JP: Look after your team and they’ll look after your clients!
