This month we caught up Lisa Persheim, Home Care Preferred’s Team Leader. Having been in the role for two years, Lisa loves to play handball and previously traveled throughout Europe to compete in tournaments. Now, she is loving her role at Home Care Preferred and she shared with us her thoughts on her job.
What appealed to you about working at Home Care Preferred?
LP: I have a degree in Psychology and a Masters in Mental Health, from an early age I have always been interested in care. I knew of Home Care Preferred in the local community so I started working with them as a carer. I progressed my way up to the team leader role as I was looking for more responsibility.
What does a Team Leader do?
LP: My role is office based and as a team leader we deal with the admin for clients and carers. We attend assessments and client reviews, as well as observe the carers.
What does a normal day look like for you?
LP: Every day is so different because there are always situations that arise that you may not have previously encountered. I often start my working day at home if I receive a call in the morning. I then come to the office and begin working on care plans and making sure they are all up-to-date. If there is an emergency I will pop out again. Generally, my role is 9am-5pm, but I am ‘on call’ twice a week and every third weekend so that carers can reach me if there are any issues.
What do you like most about your role?
LP: There are so many different aspects of the job. You have the opportunity to see clients, conduct observations and interact with team members. It’s very flexible and varied. I like helping team members and enjoy visiting clients too.
What part of your role do you least like?
LP: I don’t have a driver’s license so getting around can often be challenging.
How do you feel about Home Care Preferred’s vision and ethos?
LP: Everyone at Home Care Preferred is welcoming to staff, team, and clients. We always try our best to keep communication open, honest and welcome feedback.
What is your favourite quote that you live and work by?
LP: “Live, Love, Laugh”
What advice would you give to someone starting out in your role?
LP: Research the role and look at the skills necessary. You need to be adaptable and flexible to do the role well.
